“He could well imagine what the moon had given her: pure solitude and tranquility. That was the best thing the moon could give a person.”Haruki Murakami
The New Moon is the first phase in the lunar cycle, when it is unseen to the naked eye. Think of this phase as a reset, the beginning of your next cycle of growth. It’s the perfect time to take a break, slow down, and plant some dream seeds.
What does the New Moon represent?
The most exciting time of the Lunar cycle, the New Moon is associated with new beginnings, re-birth, a sense of being ‘in the dark’ about information not yet revealed.
It represents a new opportunity to manifest your dreams, and a chance to get clear on your goals. New ideas may be floating around at this time, and you’ll likely feel a need to ground yourself and decide which ones to hold on to.
It’s not unusual to feel anxious at the time of the New Moon. Imagine standing on the foot of a cliff, using the Moon as your lighthouse – except, this is the dark phase and she’s hiding. Yes, we can all feel a little bit lost without our guiding light – but don’t worry, she’s coming back.
How the New Moon Works
The Moon spends approximately two days in each sign of the zodiac, it takes 30 days to make its way through each sign.
The New Moon, or ‘Dark’ Moon, begins after the Balsamic Moon. It takes place when the Sun and Moon are both on the same degree of the zodiac. Knowing which sign the Moon is in, will help you understand what to work on at that time. For example, if you are a Taurus (like myself), the New Moon in this sign reminds you to be more sensual than usual, to get your finances in order, and most importantly, spend time taking care of yourself and get back in touch with your nurturing nature.

Fact: The Sun (masculine) takes a whole month to move through one sign of the zodiac.
How to work with the New Moon
- Find out what sign the Moon is in: Just like the Full Moon, how the New Moon will affect you will depend on what sign of the zodiac it is in. I use an app called, Moon Calendar, It’s got all the information you need, and tells you in detail what sign the moon is in daily.
- Get clear on your intentions: If you don’t know what you want, you’ll never know what to ask for. Before setting any kind of intentions, have an idea of your end result in life. Where do you see yourself in five years? What goals (in all areas of your life) do you hope to accomplish? If you look at the bigger picture, you’ll know what you’re working towards every time you set your monthly/weekly/daily goals – every step is a step closer to your end result. With your end result in mind, what do you hope to accomplish this cycle?
- Gratitude, attitude: The most important thing to remember, is gratitude. You’re working with Mama Moon on all levels – if you want to harness the power of this phase, you need to be in a place of gratitude before setting your intentions. What are you grateful for and why?
- Affirm and release: Positive affirmations cement our beliefs. Affirm out loud, with your hand on your heart, something which resonates with you and your intentions. Visualising your goals achieved, whilst letting go of expectation, is the best way to release your intentions.
New Moon worksheet
I’ve created a worksheet for you to use, which will help you make the most of this Lunar phase and get clear on your intentions.
After use, you can store it away, tear it up, or burn the page (burn outside on a heatproof surface, away from harm – please take care when doing so). Burning the page is the most effective way of releasing, it feels like magic watching your words disappear, and helps you fully let go of expectation.

Happy Moon manifesting – you deserve all the best things in life.
Until next time,
