Spiritual Practices / Spirituality

What IS Spirituality?

Maybe you’ve heard the word Spirituality, but you don’t really know what it means, or if you can even consider yourself a spiritual person.

Spirituality is a word you will hear me use a lot, but it is often misunderstood. I use it when I tell you we are all spiritual beings having a human experience. But if you don’t know what spirituality means, then how do you know you’re experiencing it?

Firstly, let’s look at the difference between spirituality and religion.

Religion vs Spirituality

Religion is an organized set of beliefs and practices, usually shared by a community who may worship the same deity or God.

Spirituality, as a practice, is individual. It is a personal journey to discovering one’s inner self and purpose, and looking at the world from an unlimited perspective.

Can you be both?

Yes, you can. You can identify as both religious and spiritual. In fact, there are many spiritualist churches that incorporate practices such as, energy work, meditation, even mediumship.

Do you have to be religious to be spiritual?

Of course not! You already are a spiritual being. And when we stop looking at life from a human perspective, when we see the bigger picture, that’s when we realise we are so much more than these bodies.

How will spirituality help me deal with death?

Yes, the body is temporary, it will perish, go back into the earth, but the soul lives on. As the Stoics say, “Memento Mori” remember that you too will die – death is nothing to be afraid of.

Waking up to your truth, your spirituality, is unlocking the door to the Universe.

It’s realising you already are eternal, you don’t need to try and attain it, that is your ego tricking you into believing you need to create immortality for yourself on this Earth. But immortality is something you already possess.

It’s the inner knowing that goes beyond words, the knowing that everything is love, and everything else is an illusion.

Will Spirituality help me find my purpose?

Yes, because it requires you to look within.

Your job is not to figure out how what you want is going to happen for you, but to be willing to open the door in your head, and take action. And when the door appears in your life, just walk through it. And don’t ever feel like you’ve missed your chance, because there are always more doors opening for you.

Doors open every day, you just have to unlock yourself and let go of the key.

What is God?

God is a word for an unyielding, omnipresent, omnipotent, force of Love. Whether you call this force, ‘God, The Universe, Source, Spirit, Bob,’ it’s all the same energy. When we name something, it loses all meaning, you cannot name something which cannot be named, but as human beings we need to call it something, so call it whatever feels right to you.

What does it feel like to be spiritual?

Like I’ve said, in essence, you already are, but I know our logical human minds feel the need to label everything in order to better understand. It feels like waking-up. It feels like realising there is a whole world revealing itself before your eyes, and it was always there, you just didn’t know it.

It feels like you have been re-born. Suddenly, colours, sounds, tastes, everything is much more vibrant. You appreciate life more, you appreciate Nature, you come home to love, and you realise that what you had been searching for, was always within you.

Jim Carrey made a commencement speech at the Maharishi University of Management back in 2014, if you haven’t watched it already, I will leave a link in the description and I highly recommend you listening to the whole speech.

Here’s what he said about waking up to your spirituality:

“As that shift happens in you, you won’t be feeling the world, you’ll be felt by it. You’ll be embraced by it. Now I’m always at the beginning, I have a reset button and I ride that button constantly. Once that button is functioning in your life, there’s no story that the mind could create that will be as compelling. The imagination is always manufacturing scenarios, both good and bad. And the ego tries to keep you trapped in the multiplex of the mind. Our eyes are not viewers. They’re also projectors that are running a second story over the picture that we see in front of us all the time. Fear is writing that script, and the working title is I’ll Never be Enough.”

I hope this gave you a better understanding of what Spirituality means, and also eased your mind of some of the questions you’ve probably been asking yourself about what box you’re supposed to be in – the truth is, you’re not meant to be in a box and you’re not meant to be labelled.
