Slow Sundays: Self ‘Check-in’ and January Reflection

January – the dreaded first month of the year has come to a close. While for some of us it was a mixture of January Blues and January ‘woohoos’ – it has definitely been a rollercoaster of emotions for me, I think it’s safe to say we’ve all been holding our breath and tiptoeing through it.

After the energetic climax of the Full Moon in Leo, we should all be able to feel a release of tension and anxiety – I know I certainly feel lighter.

January Reflection

I stepped into January without expectation. I didn’t wade blindly through the uncertainty with a list of goals or resolutions, I simply, stepped in.

After the decline into Winter in December, January has felt like a slow crawl through an ever-expanding tunnel. However, the light has begun to emerge – maybe not to the physical eye just yet, but on a soulful level, I feel it coming.

For many of us, this light may feel like being lulled into a false sense of security – we might make a break for it before being plunged back into darkness. Not a pleasant feeling, but, disappointment can be avoided if we are prepared mentally.

Keeping a level-head and maintaining an overall state of neutrality, is important to my daily functioning. Yes, be optimistic, but don’t let fear of what could happen manifest as ‘toxic’ positivity – by that I mean, total avoidance of the situation and planning your life regardless. This is a collective shift we are going through, it has a ripple effect on the reality we are currently experiencing.

“You can not change what you can not change, but you can change your mind.”

My mind is the only thing I have control over. If you want to change your external world, start by changing your internal one.

We are all looking at life through our own filtered perception – the wounded perception, the Ego perception. The way we view the world is based on our experiences in life. If we believe everyone to have an ulterior motive, to be unfaithful, to be against us, then this is all we will see.

This month I took myself out of the equation. I took a break from social media, from people, even from my ‘self’, and simply sat alone.

Taking this sojourn from society, as I do every once in a while, gave me time to catch up with my soul. To re-connect with my spirituality. To come home to myself.

It gave me the opportunity to re-assess my point of view, my limiting beliefs, and the person I had currently been showing up as.

It gave me the clarity of mind I was seeking.

My January Favourites

I started using The Daily Stoic Journal as part of my daily mindful practice, alongside its companion, The Daily Stoic. It is exactly what I was in want of – its daily prompt for both morning and evening reflection, fit perfectly into my daily routine.

Alongside this duo, I have started a regular ‘mind blurt’ of a journal. I use this whenever I feel the need to get things off my chest, or to put in writing my feelings, and keep a general tab on my well-being.

Binaural Beats

Sometimes, we are unable to manifest because we are unable to receive. If we have ‘subconscious walls’, then nothing is able to break through them – and behind these walls are where our limiting beliefs hide.

I’ve started using subliminal messages to break down these subconscious walls, and dissolve my limiting beliefs which have kept me from fully receiving.

I signed up for a 7 day free trial at Sound and Soulful and decided it was a worthy addition to my daily life. The subliminal library is unlimited – you can listen as much as you want, and I think the monthly subscription is very reasonable. Click to try it out free for 7 days (not sponsored – just spreading the love!).

Essential Oils

Incorporating essential oils into my daily life is simple and effective. Since studying aromatherapy years ago, I drifted away from them for some time.

This month I bought an essential oil diffuser. It’s become a real mood-lifter, with its changing lights and settings. All I do is add a few drops of essential oil and leave it on whilst I wind-down before bed.

I use Mystic Moments essential oils, they are reasonably priced and good quality.

My favourite blend for January has been: Clove Bud and Ginger – perfectly cosy.

Mindful Read Of The Month

Stillness is the Key, by Ryan Holiday

“So much of what we get wrong comes from the same place. We’re reacting to shadows.”

Ryan Holiday

The Stoics called it ataraxia, the Buddhists described it as inner peace, Ryan Holiday calls it stillness.

Stillness is the Key, ‘An ancient strategy for modern life’. I’ve been reading a chapter in the evening after I journal, tabbing my way through. I haven’t finished it yet, but it’s a welcomed addition to my bedside reading – actually, you could say Ryan Holiday has become my bedside companion…

Mantra Of The Month

“Everything always works out for me; it is safe for me to lean into faith.”

I am going to greet February the same way I did January, and simply step in.

I hope you enjoyed this post. Leave me a comment and let me know what your January favourites were, and if you’re ready to step into February with ease.

Until next time,
