May has been a heavy month, full-on emotionally and physically. While April for me was about projecting energy and attention outward, May has been a wholly reflective month, turning my attention inward.
Life is inevitably about balance – achieving harmony of opposites, as the Taoists would put it. However, one thing invariably suffers at the gain of another – balance, in all areas of life, is key to attaining lasting, sustainable happiness.
We can certainly have too much of one thing and not enough of another. This imbalance manifests in every part of our world – inner, and outer. Our financial stability comes perhaps at the cost of our mental and emotional well-being. Our social life suffers due to our inability to juggle our lifestyle, and we suffer most of all from placing ourselves last on our priority list (did we even put ourselves on there?).
As the fifth Hermetic principle of The Kybalion, the Principle of Rhythm states, everything has its opposite. What you give away in one hand, will fruit in the other. Similarly, whatever we hold onto with clenched fists, will result in lack. There is always an action and a reaction, a rising and falling.
Balance is about compromise. It’s about knowing when your pendulum has swayed too much one way, at the suffering of the other. The goal is to maintain consistency in our lives, keep the pendulum steady, resting in the middle – that is the point of neutrality, the place we simply allow ourselves to exist, and remember who we are.
Areas of life to practice balance
First and foremost, in your own well-being.
An overactive pendulum is like an overactive mind. Too much swing in life is going to upset our equilibrium. Practicing the art of stillness, incorporating mindful living practices into our daily lives, forces us to slow down – and when we slow down, so does the pendulum.
If you aren’t sleeping as much as you know you should be, ask yourself what area of your life is taking priority over your sleep. What are you over-doing that is causing your sleep to take a backseat?
Yes, you’ve been told this your whole life, ‘eat a varied, balanced diet’ ‘you are what you eat’. This is something I have been struggling with for the majority of my life, achieving consistency in my diet.
Alone time, solitude
I mention this quite often here because it is crucial to my happiness, but taking a sojourn, a hiatus from society, is very liberating. In-fact, I encourage it. Re-charge, take a break, and spend the time getting to know you better – turn your energy inwards.
Does your pendulum wildly swing between hoarding money, and splurging? Or is it relatively neutral? reflecting an equal, and healthy ingoing and outgoing.
Willingness to change – rigidness and flexibility
Where in life can we be more flexible? What areas do we need to work on compromise?
Relationships – platonic and romantic, are often the biggest challenges when it comes to achieving balance. Not only are we trying to find balance in our own lives, but we are also trying to find balance in our dynamic with another – whether they are balanced themselves, or not. Knowing which relationships are taking too much from us, vs the ones that lift us up and make us feel more like ourselves, is a big step in making ourselves a priority, and achieving balance and harmony in this area of our lives.
Is the workaholic in you over-compensating for an internal imbalance? Most often, when I am overdoing it, it’s because I’m distracting myself from a feeling, or avoiding an area of my life I don’t have the energy to deal with. Of course, if I slowed down, I would have the energy to deal with it – but I don’t always want to.
