Our sense of smell is the most evocative of our senses. It connects directly to our limbic system – the part of our brain that deals with our memories and emotions.
That’s why certain smells, fragrances, perfumes, conjure emotions in us and cause memories to resurface. When a strong emotion occurs within us, we form a link with our senses in that moment.
When the internal alchemy is activated (emotions created) your senses collect data from your outer world, sending it your hard drive (limbic system) to be stored away.
One of our best resources is parked right between our eyes – our nose. The best way to enhance our spiritual practices – meditation, healing, mindfulness, and tap into our subconscious, is to start exploring our senses.
Not only can our sense of smell take us back to the past, it can also be the gateway to instantly return to the present. There is a whole world under our noses!
Today, I am going to show you how you can use essential oils to elevate your mood, and bring out your best qualities based on your zodiac sign!
I blended the essential oils for each zodiac to best compliment their qualities. If you are an astro geek like me, then you are going to LOVE this. Let’s get started!
Essential oils for your zodiac sign
Aries – The Ram (21 March-19 April)
The first sign of the zodiac, Aries doesn’t shy away from challenge, in-fact, Aries revels in it. A cardinal sign, Aries directs their fiery energy like a rocket with the ability to propel themselves in any direction. To help prevent Aries from burning out, stoke their coals with ginger, sweet orange, and clove bud (sweet, and spicy – just like Aries).
Taurus – The Bull (20 April-20 May)
Taurus is all about the senses, nurturing their mind, body, soul, savouring the moment, and a wholesome approach to love. The first Earth sign of the bunch, fixed Taurus is the embodiment of Mother Nature and can be likened to an ancient rainforest – resilient, wise, and full of life. Their power lies in their roots, and once rooted, Taurus is impenetrable. To prevent practical and patient Taurus from getting too set in their ways, relax them with a blend of patchouli, rose, and ylang ylang (if you’re looking for a cheaper alternative to rose otto, try geranium as a substitute).
Gemini – The Twins (21 May-20 June)
The first Air sign, mutable Gemini has the gift of the gab. Intellectual and versatile, Gemini is constantly on the move. To prevent Gemini from dying of boredom, stimulate them with bergamot, basil, and lemon – massage their brains!
Cancer – The Crab (21 June-22 July)
Our first water sign, Cancer is also cardinal and can be likened to a safe harbour for boats lost at sea. Cancer is self-sacrificing for the love of others. To remind them to take care of themselves, use lavender, rosemary, and ylang ylang.
Leo – The Lion (23 July-22 August)
Let me hear you roar! Leo is our fixed fire sign (campfires, chiminea, the fireplace in our front room), Leo is the home fire everyone gathers around. Compliment Leo’s dramatic nature and hospitality with ginger, lemon, and geranium – and whip up something tasty in the kitchen!
Virgo – The Virgin (23 August-22 September)
Mutable, earthly, Virgo is the epitome of practicality. Virgo feels like a botanical garden, teeming with plants, comfortable patio chairs, fine wine, and good conversation. Prone to chronic over-thinking, Virgo can be their own worst enemy. Appreciate Virgo with a massage blend of frankincense, lemon, and cypress.
Libra – The Scales (23 September-22 October)
Cardinal Libra is like a wind instrument playing in perfect harmony – unless they’ve tipped the scales. They thrive on balance and partnership, so keep them in-tune with bergamot, rose, and neroli.
Scorpio – The Scorpion (23 October-21 November)
The still waters of fixed Scorpio run deep. Their relentless ability to penetrate even the toughest of obstacles, is just the tip of the iceberg to understanding the driving force behind tenacious, and magnetic Scorpio. With the power to wipe out the world, and soothe their loved ones in a gentle wave, Scorpio is a force to be reckoned with – but hell hath no fury like a Scorpio scorned! Capture their passion and sensuality with lavender, clary sage, and ylang ylang (add a drop of jasmine to compliment their big hearts!).
Sagittarius – The Archer (22 November-21 December)
Mutable fire sign, Sagittarius can be likened to the infinite shining stars, a sea of candles burning, or cat’s eyes along the road guiding you home safely at night. Masters of mental alchemy, Sag can transform negativity in a heartbeat with their positive outlook on life. Seeing further than anyone else, a Sagittarian friend will help you to your destination with their intuition, and enthusiasm. Honour their free spirit with frankincense, lavender, and bergamot.
Capricorn – The Seagoat (22 December-18 January)
Cardinal Capricorn is the oldest tree in the forest. Sure-footed and methodical, Capricorn is the embodiment of the Green Man, with their practical approach to money, love, and life. Bring out their sweet side with clove bud, sweet orange, and mandarin.
Aquarius – The Water Carrier (20 January-18 February)
Fixed air sign, Aquarius walks to the beat of their own drum! Likened to a sky-dive in search of self, Aqua is in a world of their own. Non-conforming, practically eccentric, intellectual genius, Aquarius can feel misunderstood, encourage their individuality with lemon, peppermint, and eucalyptus!
Pisces – The Fishes (19 February-20 March)
The dreamers of the zodiac, mutable Pisces is a blue lagoon of emotions, changing their watery form whenever the mood strikes. Rain, hail, snow, warm pools, and puddles – Pisces does it all! Creative, mystical, and highly intuitive, enhance Pisces psychic abilities with clary sage, frankincense, and patchouli.
Essential oil uses
- You can use your zodiac blends to create a massage oil using a carrier oil such as, fractionated coconut, jojoba, or almond (18 drops of essential oil per 30ml of carrier oil). Add a few drops of vitamin E oil to provide extra nourishment.
- Use them in your diffuser (3-5 drops of essential oil per 70ml water)
- Make soap! You can combine your essential oils with a natural soap base to create wonderful, zodiac soaps.
- Bath oil. I make my own bath oil blend and use it every day. Try, fractionated coconut oil, jojoba, and a few drops of vitamin E oil (dilution same as massage oil).
